Dreams vs. Goals

Happiness comes in many various forms. For me, I am always happy when I set, and accomplish, goals. Goal setting is a paramount in my life because it keeps me moving forward. I like to always tell myself that I don’t have dreams, I have goals. Dreams are nothing more than potential energy. Whereas goals, in my opinion are much more kinetic. There are many benefits to setting goals, not only does it give you a constant purpose but it also boosts endorphins, which can help you achieve goals by improving your mood, reducing stress, and boosting your self-esteem!

Setting goals helps to minimize negative distractions and reinforces positive interaction. It can encourage, inspire, and energize people and groups to concentrate on achieving desired results. However, ambiguous, impractical, or badly timed objectives can lead to disappointment and failure, which can arouse negative emotions like stress, anxiety, and dread as we try to further avoid unfavorable outcomes. That being said it’s important to focus on the details of your goals, no matter how small, in order to assure the best outcome.

Goal types

There are various avenues to explore in the realm of goal setting. As long as it does not become overwhelming, there is nothing wrong with setting goals in multiple areas of life! There are pros and cons to setting goals in multiple areas so being meticulous in your planning, as well as your execution, is key to better outcomes. Below we will go through the various types of goals that most people like to explore. Use the drop down menu for an explanation of each.

Short-term goals

Short-term goals are objectives that you want to achieve in a relatively short period of time, such as within a day, week, month, or year.

Setting short-term objectives can motivate you to pursue smaller endeavors or concepts. You can use short-term objectives as stepping stones to help you reach your long-term objectives. You can progress your career and get closer to a long-term career goal by setting short-term goals.

Long-term goals

Long-term goals are objectives that you want to achieve in the future, typically over the course of months or years. They can be difficult to complete, requiring consistent effort and advance planning.

Prioritizing your long-term goals can be achieved by listing your objectives, determining which objectives are most crucial, evaluating schedules, deciding which objectives to prioritize, and making adjustments as necessary. The SMART goal-setting framework can help you make your long-term objectives more attainable.

Personal Goals

Whether short-term or long-term, personal goals entail identifying your passions and concentrates on what is deeply personal, meaningful, and value-driven.

Personal are intended to inspire you to pursue your individual goals in life. Setting personal goals for yourself is crucial because it shows that you are willing to try new things, plan for your own success, and take action to make changes in your life. Additionally, it can help you take responsibility for your actions, which will ultimately help you advance in your relationships, career, and life. Establishing intimate objectives enables you to identify opportunities for learning from errors and apply the knowledge you’ve gained to make changes.

Career Goals

Professional goals serve as a roadmap for your professional development. Career goals, whether they are short-term or long-term, can keep you inspired and committed to your development. They can also assist you in making daily and long-term career decisions.

It’s critical to establish career goals that are timely, realistic, quantifiable, and specific. Individuals collaborate more productively and efficiently if you have a clear career plan. Establishing professional objectives can help you find your purpose and increase your self-assurance in your day-to-day tasks. By establishing career objectives, you can broaden your clientele and professional networks, both of which can improve your skill sets. By outlining the precise steps you must take and giving each task a deadline. An action plan can assist you in building momentum and a sense of urgency.

Educational goals

Educational goals are the desired outcomes that an educational institution aims to achieve in its students. They can also be the objectives or milestones that students set to guide their educational journey. Depending on your academic standing, area of study, and interests, your personal educational goals can change.

As as self proclaimed serial-learner, the importance of setting educational goals are very important to me. Education can be expensive when it comes to institutional learning, which is usually the path that I tend to take, however, learning does not always take place in a classroom. We have bookstores that carry books and magazines on various topics, free online collegiate resources, an array of YouTube videos, free seminars and a host of other learning resources outside of a traditional college classroom. Educating yourself comes with a ton of cognitive benefits and I personally believe that it keeps me sharp and youthful!

Therapeutic goals

A therapeutic goal is what you want your therapy to achieve put in terms of a meaningful outcome for yourself.

In many therapeutic contexts, goals are crucial because they frequently establish the schedule for upcoming sessions and assign significant homework. Most importantly, they provide a clear sense of direction and purpose, aiding in tracking progress and focus during therapy sessions. However the therapeutic goals that I want to discuss are more self-help centered, which mainly take place outside of the traditional office setting of therapy. I am a strong believer that therapy works, however, we also have to do the work. Doing the work involves setting realistic goals outside of therapy sessions.

Ultimately Setting goals gives you a clear direction and focus, which increases your motivation to act and accomplish your objectives. This, in turn, leads to greater productivity and a feeling of purpose in life. I hope that this post was effective in providing useful ways of setting goals!
